Work Hard Boys

At Lakefield Prep High School Coach Stevens had reformed the senior class. Normally in an all-boys private school located in the middle of Connecticut, a person couldn’t hope to rule rowdy boys. And the 18- and 19-year-olds that made up the upperclassmen were by far the worst; they had gotten used to being able to get away with everything. There was no respect given to the teachers or even the principal.
In came Coach Stevens applying for the new P.E. position after the previous coach quit in a fit of rage after a nasty prank pulled by some of the students. When Coach Stevens came in, he met with the dean of students and the first thing out of his mouth. “Paul, can I call you Paul?” The gruff Coach Stevens said. He was 200 lbs. of pure muscle, each muscle group straining the suit he had plopped on. His brown scruff also hadn’t been shaved that morning, giving him a very unprofessional look.
“That’s not my—
“Anyway, I’m thinking we gotta start bringing back PE and not some wimpy, forgettable lesson but really teaching these kids, especially those older, how to work on their bodies. When their bodies are in shape, so will their minds.”
The dean had no idea where that tangent had come from, but he wasn’t going let this guy interrupt him, “Sorry but the upperclassmen aren’t required to take PE,”
“That’s your problem right there Paul. You go too easy on these boys. I’ve recently implemented a program at a few other high schools that’s designed to help turn these boys into the young men you want them to be, and whew, trust me you need it.” Coach Steven stood up and walked towards the window behind the dean’s desk. He plucked two blinders open to stare out at the practice field where some of the kids were running around. “These boys can be disciplined, but they can also be so much more. And I’m going to help show you how.”
The dean wasn’t sure why, but he found himself agreeing. Someone needed to take control of these boys and put them on the right path. Perhaps a new itinerary was what the students needed to keep their bodies busy so their hands and minds wouldn’t go idle.

Coach Stevens blew on his whistle, “That’s it, I want to see that sweat cascading, men.” Large shirtless bodies ran around the basketball court in the gym.
“Here at Lakefield Prep Coach Stevens has reformed every class at this once denounced high school. However, his impact on the students is no more pronounced anywhere than with the seniors.” The female reporter stepped aside, letting the cameraman refocus on Coach Stevens shouting a few feet away. The Coach clapped his hands as the seniors followed his direction. “Don’t just take our word for it. Many students have their views on it too,” The reporter and camera man walked over to two students they had pulled aside.
“Ever since Coach came. He promised us that he’d start turning us into men.” Justin Travers said, wiping sweat off his face.
“Damn Coach really worked us hard today. I feel bigger already,” Preston Hughes nudged his friend on the side. Turning to the female reporter, “I have to admit I thought the coach was full of crap when he first came but I can’t deny the results.”
No one knew how the coach had gotten the students on board, but every single reporter that came to the school was always more interested in how 18- and 19-year-olds looked like they were more suited to be college seniors. Steroids would be one thing, but that wouldn’t answer how the boys matured in the way they have.
